Are you considered “self employed” if you do day trading?

Like Flowers asked:

My husband quit his job last month and now he trades stocks all day long. He wants to know if he is considered “Self-Employed” because they are offering a tuition-free semester at our local university for self-employed individuals, and he’s not sure if he qualifies. What do you think?
